Congratulations to the Class of 2023!

It is your time to celebrate your educational success and march onto independence! After the celebration, it is important to be intentional about making decisions that can help you achieve financial independence.

Did you know that Black students tend to borrow more student loans than their peers and experience greater difficulty in repayment? Use the information in this guide to help you ease the transition from borrowing to repayment. With #ShowMeYourPlan, you will learn how to:

  • know your loan portfolio,

  • explore benefits for federal student loan borrowers including loan forgiveness and cancellation,

  • choose a repayment goal, and

  • develop a personal student loan repayment strategy in four steps.

College Concerns: Guidance for New Students Navigating College in the Wake of COVID-19

Are you concerned about what your student will do and how your household will be able to pay for it? Chances are your student is concerned, too.

I created a new guide, College Concerns: A Quick Guide to Navigating College in the Wake of COVID-19, to answer five of the most common questions I have heard from students and their families. In the guide, I share my thoughts on:

  • asking for additional financial aid

  • taking a gap semester or year

  • paying “face-to-face” tuition for online education

  • rethinking your student’s first choice; and

  • contributing less toward paying the cost of your student’s higher education.

The guide also includes a reference list of important questions and who to contact for answers and links to external resources to help your family make an informed decision.

Enter your email address below to download your free copy of College Concerns. I will keep you posted on my latest news and resources. If you have additional questions, please do share them with me as I am working to expand my online library of timely and useful information.

Introducing: Melanin, Money, & Matriculation

Those who know me know how passionate I am about helping borrowers think strategically about student loans. And as such, I’m so excited to introduce my new brand: Melanin, Money, & Matriculation. This is a book series and consumer education initiative focused on helping African-American borrowers because as research has shown, Black borrowers have a unique set of challenges when it comes to student loan debt.

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing more information about how to approach the student loan decision-making process, how to put a plan together to repay your loans, and how to assess your best options for affording the education that will help you reach your career goals.

The first book, Borrowing While Black, is available now on my website (Paperback) and Amazon (Kindle and Paperback). More books—including Black Women Beyond the Bachelor’s and When Borrowing Becomes a Family Affair—and resources are soon to follow! Join my mailing list for updates.
