Welcome to the Maryland HBCU Challenge Blog
Tisa Silver Canady
Welcome to the Maryland HBCU Challenge Blog! I decided to create a new space to share my progress toward getting copies of Borrowing While Black into the hands of 600+ students who attend Maryland’s four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs):
The text below shares a bit of background on the challenge. Looking forward to sharing updates about the gift-giving process in the near future!
In November 2020, Dr. Silver Canady started the Maryland HBCU Challenge, a giving campaign to provide free copies of her book, Borrowing While Black, to 500 students who attend Maryland’s HBCUs. The campaign exceeded the goal and as a result, more than 600 students will receive a free book.
Bowie State University has been selected as the first institution for distribution. Dr. Silver Canady has presented two students, Danae Stewart and Olubukola Alana, with a $500 scholarship to serve as “Student Ambassadors” for the Spring 2021 semester. Danae and Olubukola will develop and execute a plan to spread the word about Borrowing While Black and distribute the books on their campus.
